Help Prevent Cytomegalovirus (CMV) in Children and Teens
Learn about a no-cost clinical trial to evaluate an investigational mRNA vaccine designed to prevent cytomegalovirus (CMV) in children and adolescents ages 9 to 15.
What is CYTOMEGALOVIRUS (CMV)?
CMV is a common herpes virus spread through bodily fluids like saliva, blood, urine, and breast milk. While many healthy people don’t show symptoms, CMV can cause fever, fatigue, muscle aches, swollen glands, and sore throat.
Once infected, the virus stays in the body for life. By age 19, about 40% of Americans have been exposed.
The most serious risk is congenital CMV (cCMV), when the virus is passed from mother to baby during pregnancy. This can lead to hearing loss, developmental delays, and other long-term health problems. Adolescents, especially from underserved communities, face higher risks.
FILL OUT THE FORM IF A CHILD OR TEEN IN YOUR CARE MEETS THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA
- •Between 9 and 15 years old
- •In generally good health
- •Able to attend regular clinic visits over the next 18 months
About the Study
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a common virus that usually causes mild or no symptoms, but it can lead to serious complications in pregnant individuals and those with weakened immune systems. It can also be passed to unborn babies, causing congenital CMV, which may result in hearing loss or developmental delays.
There is currently no approved CMV vaccine. This study is part of a global effort to prevent CMV in youth and reduce risks for future generations — especially in communities disproportionately impacted, including Hispanic and African American populations.
Participants will receive three vaccine doses over six months, with follow-up visits for up to a year. All study-related care is provided at no cost, and compensation may be available for time and travel.
Why Participate?
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a common virus that often goes unnoticed, but it can lead to serious complications, especially during pregnancy. This clinical trial is testing an investigational mRNA vaccine designed to help prevent CMV infection in children and teens ages 9 to 15.
If your child qualifies and you choose to participate, they will receive:
No-Cost Study Care
Study-related care from experienced doctors, nurses, and research staff at no cost.
Exams
The study will include physical exams, laboratory work, and other examination visits with a trained investigator.
Compensation
The participant might be eligible to receive compensation for their time and travel.
